Were you born to create? Our BS in Digital Cinema and Filmmaking (DCF) will prepare you for the professional world of cinema, television, and Internet drama production. Whether you want to make documentary films or fiction features, be a video journalist, a cinematographer, or an editor, the DCF program will provide you with the real-world skills you need to achieve a successful career in film.

Multi-Media Film Production

  • Learn in our state-of-the-art Communications Center, equipped with professional digital equipment including HD cameras, AVID and Adobe Creative Cloud editing systems, two digital audio recording studios, two sound stages, and a high caliber film screening room with surround sound.
  • Through required internships you will earn academic credit, gain valuable professional skills such as research, writing and pitching ideas, technical HD video production, digital editing (Adobe and Avid), directing, producing, and casting; and build a network of industry contacts.
  • Upon graduation, you will have created multiple short film projects which will form the basis of your professional reel.

The program combines the study of aesthetic filmmaking, technical training, and hands-on production in all aspects of digital filmmaking, providing you with start-to-finish knowledge of the process of making fiction and non-fiction films through courses including cinematography, lighting for HD, editing on multiple platforms, screenwriting, and on-set procedures. Elective classes focus on major directors, themes like romantic comedy and women in film, scriptwriting, casting, and advanced technical skills like lighting, cameras, and editing.

Our faculty brings real-world experience directly into our state-of-the-art Communications Center where you will take most of your classes. They are experts in a variety of specialties including video and audio production, screenwriting, public relations, advertising, media theory, film, performance, speech and journalism. Specialized adjunct professors bring valuable knowledge of the most current trends in their fields to the coursework, and enhance your networking opportunities.

Add Opportunities and Experiences

MCVA created Booth Review in fall 2021 to examine the intersection of sports media and broadcasting with new technologies. Booth Review will help you to explore the field of sports media and broadcasting through internships, academic research, education, and mentoring. Areas of inquiry include social media, audio storytelling (podcasting), digital photography, and television broadcasting. Booth Review also explores electronic media, print journalism and public relations as they relate to sports media and broadcasting. As a Booth Review intern, you will gain real-world, hands-on experiences as you work across a variety of sports media areas including podcast production, blog writing and social media. You will gain skills in interviewing, filming, and social content creation. Faculty research has included best sports podcast practices and the impact of NIL on sport public relations. Faculty/student collaborative research efforts include a Social Justice Week panel on professional athlete鈥檚 use of social media for advocacy.

Students on the Westchester Campus may be eligible to join the Mu Iota Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), a student organization of the National Communication Association. Lambda Pi Eta. The Media, Communications, and Visual Arts department hosts an annual networking event, Connections in Communications, to bring together professionals in the field with current undergraduate majors.

After rigorous hands-on courses in pre-production, principal photograph and post-production, students have gained the necessary knowledge to intern at Tribeca Film Festival, ABC Networks, 30 Rock, The Early Show at CBS, New Line Cinema, SyFy鈥攁nd leverage those experiences into promising careers in entertainment.
